At 170m long 'Florence' is the largest tunnel boring machine (tbm) ever to be used on a UK rail project.
360 Geomatics are pleased to have been commissioned to carry out weekly level monitoring of the sub-station structures either side of the tunnel entrance, whilst the machine cuts through the chalk below.  The sub-stations have been built specifically to power the tbm.

Florence will spend the next three and a half years boring through the chalk beneath the Chiltern Hills. The cutter head will rotate at up to 3.2 rpm with the machine expected to cover15.6 m per day.

The SSEN West Hyde level monitoring work connected to HS2 and the Chiltern tunnels is a good example of how precise measurement contributes to the safe management of major infrastructure. Ongoing monitoring requires consistency, robust baselines and careful interpretation of changes over time. In projects like this we follow strict procedures to ensure that data is both repeatable and traceable, giving stakeholders confidence in the findings. The images on this page illustrate some of the conditions encountered, but the real value lies in the structured monitoring regime behind them. If you are responsible for an asset that may benefit from similar observation, we would be pleased to discuss suitable strategies.
